I'm still going with the Rams as my "sleeper" team of the year. Especially since Bradford has gotten some upgrades at WR.

For the Packers, hopefully the OL can start stabilizing (RT in particular) so the players can become more of a unit, and, hopefully, can start opening some holes for the RBs. What has shocked me this off-season was the signing of (not so) Young. I have been a consistent supporter of Harrell, with my major evidence the Packers lack of effort to find someone to seriously challenge him. Now, it could very well be that Harrell could be cut, with VY as the backup. Coleman could be stashed on the PS again- but then again, it might be time to change the backup QB paradigm, and revert to the many QBs who backed up Favre for years.

I hope we see Lacy and other guys who didn't play against AZ.  I doubt I'll see the game down here but maybe I'll be able to see it replayed on the NFLN.

You can watch it on First Row,"http://firstrowus1.eu/sport/american-football.html (http://firstrowus1.eu/sport/american-football.html)"
or one of the other games playing.

Thanks Mark! My guess is that these are safer options to use.

Like a previous poster, I'd suggest using 1st Row at your own risk. I used 1st Row for a number of games over the past couple of years, and just dealt with the annoying "pop-up shell game."

But the last time I tried it, about a year ago, my laptop picked up some kind of nasty virus, one which ultimately caused me to have to do a scrub on my machine. This bug prevented or thwarted every attempt I tried to run any kind of utility, including running in safe mode. In my opinion 1st Row it is a dodgy site, AT BEST!

I have been using First row for a few years and havent had any virus issues, but I could see it being an issue.  There are numerous pop ups.  I usually am able to close things without a problem.  I will never click on anything they tell me I need to load to watch the program

Lacy averaging 6.5 yds per carry, very hard  to bring down.  Good to see.

A Finley hold killed the drive but the offense looked great. Finley had some nice catches, Lacy looked great, and the oline was solid

So what's going on?
Finley commits a boneheaded holding penalty negating a 1st & Goal.
Crosby kicks a FG.
Title: Re: Official Game Day Thread - Packers @ Rams
Post by: marklawrence on August 17, 2013, 07:18:49 PM
Quick out pattern to Finley who shrugs off a defender and makes 10.

handoff to Lacy up the middle for 10

throw up the middle to Finley for about 25, he's tough to bring down.

Larry, this pink crap has to stop. I had to click "post" four times to get it done. Takes all the fun out of real time.

And then after you post you get dumped out of the thread.

Sucks.

DJ Williams had a great block on a Lacey run.  Hawk cannot cover .. anyone.  Our defensive line is being pushed back big time by the Rams offensive line.

He didn't really have anyone get within 2 yards of him and all the RB did was run to the right and look up to catch a pass.  I'm just saying after 8 years of being a middle linebacker you would hope that is something we can defend

That was a rush blitz from the far side,  no one missed a block. Don't get started, I don't wanna hear how we suck.

The WR still screened him. Tough for any LB to catch up after that as Gannon pointed out. That's what caused the RB to be open.

You should try being in zone coverage and have a RB turn a flat route into a wheel and see how open he gets on you.

I'm not, just listing the plays.

It was, but Televecchio's slow release made that even closer than it should have been.

...Hawk was in man coverage, ran straight to him when the play started and it all took place within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.  Had it turned into a wheel route as you said I'd be fine with that, I just think it'd be nice if Hawk could stay with his man for 10 yards

Would have had 1st and goal on first series but J Mike holding penalty made it 3 rd and 14 instead.  Bak gave up sack on last drive- as said- growing pains.  Last drive started on our own 2, so field gaol pretty good.

He just doesn't have the speed to cover deep but in slot he looks great.

I know we are only up 6, but I am very happy with the team tonight. Add Cobb and Nelson to the offense and watch out. Defense held its own and that is without your top 2 corners and Jones.

And the Rams are still playing their #1's?

Gotta think this is true.  Williams' drops may drop him from the team.  Bostick needs to block better though.

Good to see Bostic making some catches.  With Quarless hurt and Williams failing to step into the void, the door is wide open for Bostic to sneak onto the roster.

Did we just punt 21 yard for a touchback?

Why not try a FG if we were that close?
It would have been a 60yard FG try.

If it was a 21 punt how could it be a 60 yard FG?
21 net. Touchback.

In the first half, sure.  In the 2nd half I'm not overly concerned whether Young is leading TD drives with bottom tier of the roster.  I'd just as soon see the K's attempt a few 40+ yard FG's.

1st half impressions

Positive>
 - 1st string offense moved down field easily, but could not finish the drives.
 - Finlely and Bostik making good plays at TE.
 - Eddie Lacy looked good... only negative was 3rd and 1 we did not pick up, but Newhouse and Lang got blown up on right side.
 - Crosby looked good on his 2 kicks.
 - CBs wrapping up on tackles... Hyde, Shields, House all had some good stops on run
 - Packers rush defense looks good again and great goal line stand.
 - Special teams coverage.
 - Boykin great catch and run.
 - Hyde took a punt return and looked decent.
 - Jolly already has looked very good on one play with penetration.

Negatives>
 - Pass defense and pass rush is terrible again.
 - Tavecchio missed FG
 - Walker does not look as good as TC and game last week.
 - Bakhtiari gave up sack and had penalty.
 - 3rd and 1 Lacy did not pick up... but that was not his fault, right side of line let all kinds of penetration.

Harrell has looked better this week, on target, good decisions thus far.
Hyde got beat deep and could have given up TD, but very good coverage on 3 other passes vs speedy Austin and also good in run support.  Great stop on WR at 2 yard line after catch... he can tackle well.

Saying the pass defense was terrible seems extreme. They gave up two big plays but Hyde and Burnett made some nice plays. Considering they dont have Williams and Heyward I am going to say they looked pretty good. Not a ton of pass rush but Bradford got hit hard a couple times.

It never seems to work very good.  I don't see the point of giving up 15 yards for free.  Maybe you are right about Matthews, Jones and Perry, but that defense always seems to cost the Packers or just nearly cost them.

No it really wouldnt.  If you count Neal as an OLB on the DL you have
1. Raji
2. Pickett
3. Jones
4. Wilson
5. Daniels
6. Boyd
7. Jolly

Am I missing someone?

The OLB cuts would be interesting. Locks for Clay, Perry, Neal.  Moses seems like a lock then you have Palmer and Mulumba.  One of those two would definitely have to be on the PS but would either make it there?

But they dont really need to call him a DL specifically if he can play OLB as well.  It gives the team roster flexibility and if the last DL is more valuable to the team than the last OLB then you have the ability to do that.  I think Palmer or Mulumba has a better chance to make the PS than Boyd so I would go that route

How's that?

Maybe 3 plays... 1 big return when backups were in, 1 bonehead play by Brandon Smith not getting away from ball on ground and it touches him and Crosby kick that was partially blocked... but still good.

I think special teams in first half for Packers was great other than Tavecchio missed FG...  we bottled up Austin on punt/kick returns very well.

Maybe but with how good the Packers are at drafting I think teams take notice when they cut a guy they used a pick on.  How often have we been able to stash our own draft picks (not counting 7th rounders) on the PS?

Stoneburner just proved why he might be able to be put on the PS that was a hellava play by him

If I have to choose between risking Boyd or Palmer, it's going to be Palmer.

Oh I agree I just dont think it is safe to assume Palmer makes it there.  I love the idea of keeping 7 DL and Neal as a hybrid.  Jolly has earned a spot as even though I missed the second half of the game it sounds like he played a great game.  I saw Wilson blow up a run earlier as well

Nice to see Coleman play better.  Great catch by Stoneburner.

Care to elaborate...some of us are not seeing or hearing the game.

This is what I was thinking when I made the original comment.  We've got a group of rookies that can fill the roster by being cut and placed on the practice squad.  We always fear that they won't make it, but teams rarely take rookies cut at final cutdowns.  It happens, but it isn't that common.  Keep 7 DL, and then Neal as a hybrid, filling out the OLB depth.

I'm wondering if Neal isn't the one at risk with the DL.  If he doesn't make an impact at OLB, then he might be the one who is odd man out.

Coleman is 7/11 for 82 and one TD.  Ball coming out crisp, and he looks like he is directing the offense well.  Tonight he looks like he could be a backup QB and not be a total loss.

Jolly is their best defensive lineman, how is that even possible?

Cant see that happening. In 11 games he had 4.5 sacks. That is very good production for the DE position.  I would be shocked to see Neal get cut.

Brandon Smith will be on the first cut list....  bonehead play on special teams, penalty to extend drive and beat for TD.

I don't think so. I think we want him on the PS. He's a converted WR, he's very new to all this, very raw, very fast, very powerful. We wanna coach him up for  a year.

With how the numbers look, It might be hard for Smith to even make the practice squad.

Probably because Jolly knows that this is his last shot.  He is definitely playing like a man who knows his career is on the line and is eager to reward the Packers for having the guts to give him a second chance. Also, I heard he has just gotten married and that his wife was said to be the best thing that ever happened to him. He is really out to prove he is a changed man I am starting to believe it.
