Title: The OFFICIAL Packers v. Ravens Game Day Thread

Packers need more TDs and fewer FGs, and a road win would be nice. Make Flacco beat you by stopping Rice.

Flacco is capable of big plays, but the way to beat him is presure up the middle. He's not going to beat you with his feet and if he doesn't have a clean pocket to step up into, he's in trouble from an accuracy standpoint.

We need to run the ball effectively against them as well because Suggs and CO can bring it.

I think this is a good matchup for us.  We can play good run defense, Flacco's not a runner, and their passing offense isn't that great.  Our defense has a good shot to contain them reasonably well, and perhaps to get some sacks or a turnover.  We've got a fairly balanced run/pass offense at present.  It will again be up to our offense to convert enough of their opportunities.  But I think we should convert enough to win this game.

Its going to be intresting to see who we well match up against Torrey Smith, hes having a great year, and if we let them get vertical it well open the run game real quick.

Well.. sucks if Clay is out a month.

Still... more optimistic about this game now than when first saw it on the schedule, Ravens are tough at home, but this is not the same Ravens team.  Ravens OL was/is a mess and the have no run game.  They average less than 80 yards and Rice has had issues with fumbling and did again vs Dolphins.  Basically everything is on Flacco to win them their games and still without J. Jones.

Think their defense is still pretty good, other than Denver game they have held teams in check... but that Broncos game was pretty horrid and this is only 2nd decent QB they will face.

Perry and Neal will have to have big games again, will need the pass rush this week.

Guys got to step up and beat the guy in front of them. Plain and simple! Reports are AT LEAST a month. If so, Ravens, Browns, Vikings and Bears. All still winnable games, but they become losable games now too.

Aaron Rodgers needs to be Aaron Rodgers the next month and carry us on his back with a running game to keep defense off field.

Any word on Hayward? That could soften the blow just a little bit.

Ya know if Perry plays well on the Right side Matthews could wind up moving to the left side in his return. He did start out over the RT as a rookie and second year guy and was a beast. Could be a blessing in disguise if we win these games with Matthews out.

Hope it's only a month.

two big matchups we'll have to win:

1.  covering Torry Smith deep.  if we can keep Smith from getting over the top against our safeties, we should be able to contain Rice.  it sounds like Marlon Brown is coming back, and he's been a solid player for the Ravens so far.  but i think keeping Shields on Smith is still the way to go.  sure would be nice to have Hayward in the slot to pick off some of Flacco's short throws.

2.  contain Haloti Ngata.  this guy is beastly and he'll give our OL all they can handle.  if we can keep him off Rodgers and have success running away from him, our offense should score enough to win.

We handled Suh and Farley and the Ravens have been gashed in the running game a few games this year.

He had hamstring issue in preseason, but this is actually the other leg.  McCarthy said today he may only be out one week.

Hayward may practice Thursday to see how he is...   Thursday will probably be very telling if he can play.

I think the Players Association should consider their next lawsuit to be about hamstring injuries. "Your Honor, we'd like to call our next witness - the entire GBPacker team......"

Whats with all these continued references to a running game? This is a Packer Forum no? Did it wander into the wrong room?

Heres what scares me about Balt. Ngata, Canty, Suggs all backed up by Elvis Dumerville at LB. Their def front is big and good.the wild card is Dumerville. If we see a lot of blitzes, we could be in trouble. The one matchup I dread is Suggs on Bak. It could get ugly. Rodgers better get rid of the ball fast of he might get hurt in this game. Both teams will be hungry and Balt has a big advantage playing at home

Best way to slow down pass rushers is with a good run game. Plain and simple. Lacy is big and tough enough to gain yardage against them up the middle and keep those pass rushers a half step slower.

Ngata and the back-up nose have not been practicing this week.  I would assume Ngata won't be 100% if he does play.  Raven defense is not the same without him.

Yeah... I saw Ngata was out Wed/Thurs from practice.  Just checked Ravens site now and shows he was limited participant today.  He is listed as questionable, but I assume he plays on Sunday and will be less than 100%.

If he is not effective, that is big break for Packers.

This will be a tough match-up for the Packers, especially on the road.

Like most games, this one will probably be won or lost in the trenches.  Each team will look to exploit the other's offensive line.

The Ravens' offensive line has been a sieve, and consequently, the overrated Flacco has been under duress, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns.  Furthermore, the running game has been non-existent:  they're 26th in rushing yards per game and 31st in yards per carry at 2.8.  Given the Packers' stout run defense this season, the Ravens are probably going to need to be productive through the air.  With Smith as the only viable option, the Ravens have been mediocre in the passing game.  Jacoby Jones might return Sunday, though, and if that's the case, look for Flacco to throw deep and often if the line can hold up.  Monroe, whom the Ravens traded for the other week, is slated to start at left tackle.  He was really good against the Packers last year, and now the defense is without Matthews.  I'm really interested to see how Capers attacks the Ravens' line.  I'd be aggressive early and often.

The strength of the Ravens' defense is their line.  Suggs, who is having another defensive MVP type season, will probably line up across from Bakhtiari all game.  That's scary enough to make you pee a little.  Dumervil on the other side facing Barclay doesn't make me feel much better.  I hope that, given Ngata's injury as well as the solid play from the interior of the Packers' line, pressure won't come from the middle and the edges, so Rodgers may be able to step up to avoid some of the inevitable pressure from the outside.  If he can, he should be able to exploit what is a rather pedestrian secondary that has given up quite a few big plays this season:  they gave up three plays of 40+ last week against the Dolphins.  Despite that, though, we might be in for a lot of quick passes and outs in an effort to slow down Suggs and Co.

GB has been facing top tier defensive fronts all season, so the team should be as ready as they can be for BAL.  Much like what happened vs DET, I expect GB will have some success running the ball out of the shotgun, which should help keep the BAL pass rush in check.  The topic of the week for the offense seems to be the recent red zone struggles.  The offense will probably need to improve in that area to come out of BAL with a win.

Rodgers as mccarthy need to be patient.  Nothing wrong with four and five yard passes.  Don't go for the dep ball and oil drives today.  Take what they give you ALL DAY. Don't go deep on third and short an kill drives

Ray rice is horrible in pass protection. We need to take advantage of that.
Torrey smith has become a top ten WR and has been very impressive.  Scare of him

I'm actually OK with some deep balls, including on 3rd-and-short.  I don't think Baltimore has a great offense.  So there aren't going to be a lot of scores.  And I don't think we're likely to continuously be able to grind out 1st-down-after-1st-down-after-1st-down and drive down the field all the time either.  Sometimes yes, but that's tough.  So it may be that taking a couple of big-play shots will be OK.  Convert on a couple, miss on some others.  But a couple of offensive big-play TD's may be the ticket to winning the game.

Hope I'm wrong, of course, and that we can just consistently chunk out first downs and steadily march down the field time and time again.

I think Finley is going to be our most difficult match up for the Ravens to defend. Their safeties aren't exactly great and Elam, the rookie is inconsistent, not to mention he's 5'8. Couple of TD's for Finley today, book it.

When you listen to the talking heads talk about the Lions game against the Browns without CJ possibly, you get the sense they didn't give our defense much credit as much as blame the Lions woes on no CJ. I hope we can prove them wrong this week and would love to see us EARN some respect on defense.

Boyd only healthy scratch. CJ Wilson active for first time since week 1. Terrance Cody sure hasn't panned out the way I thought he might. He could be a cheap addition as a run stopper this offseason if/when we lose Raji and Pickett. Then again, if he isn't motivated, he'll likely be out of the league soon.

Settling for field goals in and just outside the redzone is frustrating, but it has to be doi g wonders for Crosby's confidence.  That could end up paying off in the long run if he's needed for a game winning field goal in the playoffs.  Of course, if the offense doesn't end up getting better along the way, it may never come to that.

Just food for thought and trying to find a reason to keep positive.

Not sure that is a blocking scheme we want when Finley is one on one with a DT.

Yeah, I was trying to see how Finley ends up blocking the DT there.  Odd.

Is it just me or does it seem like when Rodgers checks out of a play it doesn't work? I have absolutely no way of verifying if thats the case but it is an impression I've gotten over the last few games.

IMO, when  they have six in the box which they did that play nad Ngata on the bench you run up the middle. Didn't like the call because the strenght of the d was outside.

Yes that and the look to Lacy seemed to give it away as someone else pointed out. I don't know mayb Rodgers is checking out of a play that really wouldn't work to something that wont be as bad as oppoesed to exploiting something he sees in the D?

Not happy with the offense today.  They come out gashing them with the run then kill the drive with three straight passes.  A couple drives ago, Rodgers could have picked up a first by taking two steps but decides to throw the ball instead.  A drop by Nelson, a miss on a catchable ball to Finley and this offense continues to stall.  3rd and 2, we decide it's a good time to give the ball to Franklin.  What are Lacy's strengths again?

This is frustrating to watch.

So I lied about my last post today but seriously?  What more can the D do?  They have done enough the first half that they can let 17 go in the second and I won't blame them for a loss.

Great stop.  The defense is playing a physical game at the LOS.  The offense needs to take some notes.

I guess that lack of excitement that was mentioned in the pre-game is playing out on the field. This game sucks. I thought McCarthy was an offensive genius. Doesn't look like it this year.

Maybe just maybe MM got too much credit for what Joe Philbin did perhaps?

Fact is, Packers are about a 9-7 team right now.  They play an inordinate amount of terrible teams this year so they may go 10-6 but they aren't going anywhere in the playoffs.

Right now I would agree, but it;s a long season.  Who would have thought it would be the offense holding the team back.  If the offense can ever kind of in sync, this team will be very dangerous... baring more injuries.

He's really not terrible at all.  This is a lack of chemistry issue.  If you're going to blame him for the drop then I guess by that metric Nelson is terrible as well.  On top of that, who's to say Rodger's throw wasn't off on that sideline?

Sorry but this is just silly.  Nelson is a proven, productive player with highlight reel catches to his credit.  Players are judged by their entire body of work, that's why Nelson's drops don't make him a terrible player.

Boykin is in danger of playing himself "off" the team at this rate.  It's one thing to play in practice and pre-season, but if you can't handle playing on Sundays then you don't help the team.  Hopefully he settles down and gives us something in the 2nd half.

I don't mean after the game today, but with Jones injury it seems likely they bring up a guy from the PS or a street FA who very likely could move ahead of Boykin - at which point Boykin becomes more expendable when Jones is back.

Ugh . . . forget it.  Now it looks like Cobb is gone.  Perhaps for awhile.  :-\  Boykin is safe.   :)

We need Finley to absolutely jack Elam up and dropkick/shoulder his knees and then ask him how he feels about going low. Such a dirty player, second time this has happened where he was the culprit of an illegal hit. That should be an illegal hit.

Tough being a defender, but going for the knees is quite dirty, agreed.

Crazy to be watching this game where the offense looks so inept and the D is carrying the team.  Without Cobb or Jones this D probably needs to keep BAL under 12 points

At this point I have no idea how GB will move the ball on offense.  The OL isn't the kind of line thhat can impose their will.  The threat of a passing game is what makes the GB running game go.

D-Jones almost cost us the chance to score.  Can't blame him, but I was getting nervous.

Really?  We get a turnover and he's racing to the endzone and you're hoping for a Crosby FG attempt?  I'm calling you a liar right now :)

Not lying at all.  It was clear with about 8 seconds on the clock that he wasn't going to make the EZ

I gotta say I was hoping he'd lateral or something... it's the only way GB will get to the endzone :p

We'll go two tight end this half.  Need to have J. Mike in the slot and push it up the field.

Heck two tight end with a running threat might be what we need.

They need to attack Elam. If I were a coach that would be part of my gameplan going into halftime. Make him wish he'd never stepped on the field.

Yeah, to wish that about anybody is classless. Defenders go high they are flagged. They really don't have much of a target anymore. I don't agree with going for the knees but they are really put in a tough position.

Need to pound the ball ...run first and pass when the opportunity is there.  At this point, it's pretty clear that passing is not our best option.

If there was ever a time for Finley to step up, it is now.  I wish Driver was an option but his days are long behind him and I'm not sure he would provide much.

Agreed. It was total bush league. He aimed at the knee. No way to defend against that. The only hope is that it's not an ACL. If they can get Cobb back at any point this year they'll be fine, but they can't afford to lose him for the season. That would be devastating to this offense. I'm pretty pissed at the Packers for continuing to play finesse football on offense while Baltimore is clearly aiming for blood. They need to come back with some fire in the 2nd half. McCarthy is getting his ass handed to him and Rodgers is getting hammered. It's time to hammer back.

At least the defense is bringing some fire today. Too bad the offense hasn't matched that intensity yet.

Stepping back a little here and looking at the situation

- Up by 6 at the half
- Cobb and Jones are out on offense
- Matthews and Perry are out on defense

If GB comes out of this game with a win, it's a pretty good win no matter how ugly it may look.

Honestly, I'd be thrilled just to see a few first downs and a field goal.  My expectations for this offense have fallen that low.

It's like the best thing we could do is just down every kick that makes the end-zone.  Just take the ball at the 25 every time.

Ross was not good and it's OK that they cut him, but it also doesn't look like the return team can block for anyone.

Major screw up by Finley not staying in bounds. We could have essentially ended the game if he had.

I think he was trying to at the last second.  I'll take it though.

Lacy always seems to turn his back into contact I dont know if I like that as it kills his momentum.

If Finley stays in bounds this game is effectively over.  He's an idiot, but at least he caught the ball.

Even the rookie was smart enough to stay in bounds!

Big win thank you defense minus McMillan. Pick your stuff up, your dismissed.

Given the circumstances MONUMENTAL win for us. Praying for the best with Cobb and Jones, but neither looked good.

The offense really came through when the defense decided it was their turn to be inept.

Unfortunately, the situation going forward this season is very ugly

I'm glad we snuck away with a win but we've got ou work cut out for us now.  The injuries are getting to be too much.

Even though the offense saved the team's bacon in the 4th, you know the only thing Rodgers' critics will point to is that it wasn't a comeback win.

Yep.  I'm not sure how the team can realistically compete in the playoffs with what they have right now.

Strange win but I'm happy. The D was great until the end. Hawk was amazing. I don't like McMillian I think I 've said in every game thread he is simply atrocious. My concern before the season was that the D would let the team down but it is carrying the Team. The problems on the O are fixable. More Lacy running like today and the pressure on Rodgers will subside opening up the pass more like the Nelson TD (even if was a blown coverage.) I would like to see them going with the run and quick passes more. I think without the wideout depth of the last few years they need to dial down the depp balls. Need to build on the run to set up those passes now or at least until they can find a couple of receivers to truly spread things out.

The funny part about the G-Jennings situation is that he now would have exactly the opportunity he craves had he stayed in GB

If Richardson is ever cleared to play, I have to think McMillian is toast.  He single handedly gave BAL their last TD

I blame Capers for calling a bad play more. Keeping the play in front of you when they were clearly trying to get behind the defense. With or without McMillan falling that was still going to be a catch because Capers called a dumb play. Man coverage and 3 deep Safeties is what should have been called.

I do not believe for a second that the defense was executed as designed, and I have no idea what makes you say McMillian wouldn't have been able to defend that play if he handles his area of responsibility correctly

McMillan CANNOT let anyone get behind him in that sitaution. PERIOD. They also were protecting against the first down marker. Also, I'm more upset with the 3 man rush and prevent defense.

The play was designed to keep them from getting a first down. It wasn't designed to cover 3 deep receivers.

The problem was rushing only 3. I would have gone and got Flacco and made him get it out of his hands quickly. I agree with Mazrimiv, the defense was executed poorly.

Boy, I look at all of the replies I would think that we lost.  Let's talk about who really showed up - Hawk, Lattimore, Neal, Hyde, Lacy and I would say the offensive line.  With the injuries se overcame' this was an awesome win.
